Relief Mapping Relief mapping is sometimes called relief texture mapping. The two terms being completely interchangeable. Relief mapping is a similar technique to parallax mapping, employing a heightfield map to draw out a 2D texture into three dimensions when rendered. Its main advantage is that it is much more accurate than parallax mapping. Of course the disadvantage is that it is also much more processor intensive.
